The term “school-to-prison pipeline” emerged and—just like corporal punishment—minority students grew to become much more likely to be turned over to regulation enforcement for in-school infractions. The 1999 Columbine High School bloodbath left 12 students and one instructor lifeless and gave rise to the era of faculty shootings. The tragedy introduced the age-old and long-tolerated issue of bullying—like the type suffered by the pair of outcasts who became murderers at Columbine—was brought to the forefront of the nationwide dialogue. With tens of millions of Americans out of work, property tax payments—and therefore faculty budgets—plummeted in the course of the Depression. Schools fell into disrepair or had been closed, academics have been fired or had their salaries decreased, and the kids who did attend have been often hungry and/or traumatized by difficult house lives.
